The development of vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors for the treatment of ocular neovascularization and macular edema can be regarded as the beginning of a new era in ophthalmological therapy. Before the year 2000, the treatment of any vascular abnormality in the retina was merely restricted to a few conventional therapies, particularly laser photocoagulation.

In an attempt to improve functional outcomes, many researchers have studied the potential application of anti-angiogenic agents to ocular diseases. Previous investigations have demonstrated that vascular endothelial growth factor plays an important role in promoting angiogenesis and vascular leakage in several ocular pathologic conditions. The main goals of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy are the inhibition of growth and development of new vessels, along with the reduction of vascular permeability. This, in turn, affects the overall progression and prognosis of the disease under investigation.

The aim of this book is to help update residents, general ophthalmologists, and retina specialists on the latest applications of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy in ocular diseases. After an outline of the rationale of using anti-VEGFs in the treatment of various ocular diseases, this book focuses on specific diseases and their subsequent treatment with the said drugs.

Apart from this, we have attempted to include various studies to further strengthen our understanding of the literature. A detailed description of the procedure of administration, along with the new-age modalities that are set to launch in the near future and would further revolutionise this field of study, is included as well.
